When I came to UK from India, the biggest shock was not the weather, it was the school admission process. In India we run after forms, donations, interviews. Here, nobody asked my child’s marks.
Here is how it actually works.
1. ADMISSION IN UK (SCOTLAND) – NO TENSION SYSTEM
In India, we apply to 5-6 schools, child gives test, parents give interview.
In Scotland, it’s all based on your postcode.
- Automatic catchment: Every address has 1-2 fixed council schools. If you live in Maryhill, your catchment is maybe Maryhill Primary or Dunard Primary. You HAVE to get a seat there.
- When to apply: Your child can start Primary 1 if they turn 5 between March 1st this year and end of February next year. Council opens online registration in November for next August start. You just go to City Council website – “P1 registration”.
- Documents needed: Only 2 – Child’s birth certificate and 1 address proof (council tax bill, tenancy agreement). No income proof, no transfer certificate, no vaccination card needed for admission.
- No exam, no interview, no donation. Illegal here to take donation for admission. Even private schools don’t take interviews for primary.
- What if you want another school? You can make a “placing request” for any other council school, but catchment school will always keep your seat safe.
- Fees: Council / State schools are 100% free. Even books, lunch for P1-P5 is free in Scotland. Uniform you buy from Tesco/Asda – no compulsory school shop.
My experience: I applied in April from home in 10 minutes, got a letter in June – “Your child got admission in…” Done.
2. WHAT IS THEIR COURSE? IT’S NOT CBSE/ICSE AT ALL
In India, Primary = heavy books, 5 subjects, written homework daily.
In UK, it’s called Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in Scotland. It’s not about covering syllabus, it’s about skills.
P1 to P7 (5 years to 12 years old)
Subjects they don’t call subjects:
- Literacy and English – Phonics, reading story books, writing small stories, not handwriting perfection. By P3 they write essays on “My weekend”.
- Numeracy and Maths – Mental maths is king. No tables ratta. They do maths with blocks, toys, shopping games till P4.
- Health and Wellbeing – Yoga, emotions, how to be safe, relationships. This is a compulsory period.
- Social Studies, Science, Expressive Arts, Technology – All through projects. e.g. For 2 weeks whole class will do “Rainforest” – they will do science, art, geography, computer all on rainforest.
- No formal exams till P7. No first rank, second rank. Teacher writes report twice a year – “She is confident in…” “He needs help with…”
3. HOW STUDY IS DIFFERENT – INDIA vs UK PRIMARY
The biggest difference I felt:
In India we prepare child for marks. Here they prepare child to be confident to ask questions.
My daughter in P7 came and said “Mum, today I made a mistake but my teacher said brilliant mistake.” I cried. In our time, mistake meant beating with scale.
Any questions about admission for Maryhill area? I can tell you which schools are good here.
If you are moving to UK recently:
- Don’t force your child to write A-Z perfectly before P1. They learn through play.
- Register on City Council website in November, even if you are on dependent visa – council cannot refuse.
- Buy uniform from Asda George – £12 for full set, don’t go to expensive uniform shops.
UK primary is slow in start, but by P6-P7 they are far ahead in confidence, speaking, and computer use.
