Hey kids! Today we’re going to have a super fun time learning about two important word families in phonics – “ack” and “ake”! Word families are groups of words that have a common feature or pattern, often having the same ending sound or combination of letters.
Let’s start with the “ack” word family. When we see “ack” at the end of a word, we know it will sound like “ack” when we say it out loud. Try saying these words with me:
- Back
- Black
- Crack
- Pack
- Sack
Isn’t that cool? These words all end with “ack” and have the same sound at the end. Can you think of more words that belong to the “ack” word family? How about snack, track, or stack?
Now, let’s move on to the “ake” word family. Words in the “ake” word family will all end with “ake” and make the same sound. Let’s practice saying some “ake” words together:
- Cake
- Lake
- Make
- Rake
- Take
Awesome job! Can you come up with more words from the “ake” word family? How about bake, fake, or shake?
Keep practicing your word families, and soon you’ll be able to read and write even more words like a pro. Learning phonics can be so much fun, especially when we get to play games and discover new words together. So keep up the great work, and remember to have fun with your learning!
Now, let’s play a fun game to practice our new word families. I’ll say a word, and you tell me if it belongs to the “ack” or “ake” word family. Ready?
- Snack – “ack” word family
- Lake – “ake” word family
- Crack – “ack” word family
- Bake – “ake” word family
- Pack – “ack” word family
Great work! You’re getting the hang of it. Word families can help us become better readers and spellers because we start to recognize patterns in words. So next time you come across a word that ends with “ack” or “ake,” you’ll know just what sound it makes!
